This game gets the inevitable comparisons to Diablo, but for me personally, it is far more enjoyable. For one, it is more simplistic…you choose from one of three classes/characters and a pet (either a cat or a dog), then you simply start adventuring. The colors used are brighter and more eye popping, in a way. The story itself is pretty well written for what it is, and there are plenty of side quests to keep you occupied as well. The combat mechanics are intuitive and easy to grasp, inventory is also easy to manage, collision detection is spot on….no real gameplay issues that I can think of. Plus, if you get bored, you can always go fishing (in game). Additionally, though Steam and elsewhere, there is a large mod community, so you can further develop and enjoy the game. With part two coming out soon (and part one be offered free as a preorder bonus at some sites), there is no reason not to pick this game up. It really is worth every penny.

    Enjoy!

Very good look and feel of Diablo II but it’s limited perspective makes the game look dated and annoying. However, it is an enjoyable and addicting game. Looking for and finding “loot” is enjoyable. Enchanting items is fun as well, not knowing exactly whether you can enchant an item or not, what enchantments you’ll get, or at worse lose all the enchantments at once. Experienced players should start out at the Hard difficulty level because anything less is way too easy and you’ll get bored fast. Besides, with all possibilities to make a powerful character, starting out at the Hard difficulty level shouldn’t be intimidating. One nice feature is no longer do you have to “Save” because the game does it automatically even if you exit out of the game. If fact, if you exit anywhere even in a dungeon not the town, when you start the game again, you open to the exact location you last were.

Let’s just come out and say it. Torchlight is a blatant rip-off of Diablo. But I don’t think that is a bad thing at all. Diablo was a good game, and in many ways, torchlight either respects the Diablo genre, or improves it. Well…almost everything. The color scheme in torchlight looks like something out of the Las Vegas strip – bright and gaudy. It is almost as if the programmers were tired of using soothing earthtones and decided to use every color that began with the word “fluorescent”. But, after an hour of gameplay or so, your eyes adjust, and can begin to enjoy a solid game that is well written, combat mechanics that are both diablo-esque and somehow more fluid.

I normally don’t replay RPGs very often, and found myself enjoying this game so much, I replayed as each character type just because it is a lot of fun. Combat is not terribly strategic, like Diablo, you can button mash your way through it or really think through your attack plan – either approach is rewarded by satisfying combat.

Hey, for a few bucks, you can hardly go wrong with this game.
