Question by Chase: Why are the reapers trying to destroy the universe in the Mass Effect trilogy?
I have played through both Mass Effect 1 and 2 but the one thing that I never understood (or maybe just missed) is why do the reapers “have to” destroy all organic life every cycle?

In Mass Effect, they don’t explain it very well. However, Mass Effect 2 gives a hint of why the Reapers are destroying the universe. Remember the Human Reaper in Mass Effect 2? In order for that thing to work, the Reapers had the Collecters take human colonists and gather their genetic materials. The genetic materials is the “gas” that starts up the Human Reaper. The Reapers “harvest” every 50000 years. The galaxy would be full of the genetic materials the Reapers use to replenish them selves. After that, they destroy the galaxy to remove any evidence that they existed or will return. The Protheans were just lucky and got a message through to Shepard.
